George Sotter (1879-1953), an artist strongly identified with Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is best known for his magical winter nocturnes, scenes made Show More...even more enchanting by the blanket of snow that is a recurring motif in his work. Equally evocative, however, are his tranquil marines and sunlit landscapes. Sotter was a master at rendering sweeping panoramic vistas of Bucks County's hills, gently rolling under cumulous cloud-filled skies that create dramatic patterns of light and shadow. He was also well known for his work in stained glass. In addition to a significant investigation of Sotter's nocturnal landscapes, Light and Shadow will present the various other types of landscape he produced throughout his career, and will introduce his work as a stained-glass artist, and examine the artistic exchange between the media in which he worked. Chronological and geographic in scope, the exhibition will also provide a regional context for the nocturne theme-the subject with which Sotter is most often recognized-and will include nocturne subjects by many of his Bucks County artistic contemporaries as well as some from further afield.. ...Show Less

DOWNTOWN DOYLESTOWN EXTENDS SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY INTO SMALL BUSINESS WEEKEND
Downtown Doylestown, Doylestown, PA 18901 Date: 11/25/17-11/26/17 WEBSITE     Sponsored by: Discover Doylestown
Started in 2010, Small Business Saturday is a well known day dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. But because Doylestown has so Show More...many amazing boutiques and unique shops to try visiting in just one day, the shopping frenzy has been expanded to an entire weekend! This year, Discover Doylestown is excited to host Small Business Weekend on November 25th and 26th. The weekend will include fantastic discount offers, unique and one-of-a-kind gifts, a festive holiday atmosphere, and personalized service from friendly shop owners!
With Doylestown's strong sense of community and the town's pride in supporting local small businesses, the business community has designed a very appropriate campaign for the 2017 holiday season - "Sleep In, Shop Small, Give Big!" The businesses which makeup the downtown shopping district have banded together to encourage shoppers to think outside the "big box" and sleep in on the day after Thanksgiving. Shops will be opening at 10am, to allow shoppers a good night's sleep, just before coming to Doylestown to shop small. At a time when an increasing number of consumers are opting to shop online - and are spreading their holiday shopping spending over a longer period of time than they did traditionally - many still prioritize visiting brick and mortar small businesses on Small Business Saturday.
Through a partnership between Discover Doylestown, Doylestown Borough, and McCaffrey's Simply Fresh, shoppers will find FREE parking each weekend throughout the holiday season! Free parking in Doylestown will include all 3 hour meters within the downtown area, beginning on Friday November 24th. Doylestown also has been promoting their own "Shop Small, Discover Doylestown" commercial, which can be seen at: https://youtu.be/VFI9UeLmAyI
3 Reasons to Shop Small this holiday season:
1. Your local economy will benefit
Shopping small creates and supports local jobs. Each time you purchase a product or a service on Main Street, you are helping to pay the salary of a friend or neighbor. When you support a local business, you're also supporting your town, city, and neighborhood.
2. Small business gives back
Research shows that over 90% of small-business owners contribute each year to their communities through volunteering, in-kind donations, and/or local sponsorships. That means your purchase of a good or service at a small business is a great way to "pay it forward." In comparison to what the local independent businesses recirculate locally, less than 14% of purchases at big box chain stores stay within the same community.
3. The misperception of high prices
Often times Small-businesses are labeled with the misconception that because they are not a "big box" they will have high prices. The reality is, with some exceptions, most stores have no control over a product's price, but rather are provided a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), which dictates what they must sell it for. Over time they can then offer special pricing or sales to help move inventory, regardless if they're "big" or "small.". ...Show Less
